Blood Angels - Knights of Blood - Finished

These really took me a long time to complete, all the details that make them amazing models are a pain when you are short of painting time.

Never the less I have them at a stage where I am happy.

As I have found out in all the previous attempts photographing them is even more difficult. Trying to get the red to look 'red' while showing off the rest of the model is proving impossible. It is a shame we can't figure this out because the models, in reality, look really good.

These are a second attempt at photographing them with different settings.

These are shots from my phone camera.

More "Blood for the Blood God"...no wait "for the Emperor!"

Blood Angels - Knights of Blood - WIP

Starting to paint the squad according to my existing scheme which is a black primer followed by my custom mix for the dark metal armour. For the red I am using  a base colour of Scab Red. The layer for the red is Mephiston Red then using Balor Brown and dark Brown for the ammo pouches and cloth areas. I will be painting the gemstones green.

These are pictures of the earlier stages.

Its been slow going but I am hoping to get them done soon.

Blood Angels - Knights of Blood - WIP

I have been wanting to continue expanding my Blood Angels army for a long time now but like so many hobby projects this year, other things intervene.

This squad is armed for close combat with mostly chain-sword and bolt pistols, I have also included some heavier weapons like Plamsa Gun, Melta Gun and Flamer but nothing that should inhibit movement. I have used backpacks but could swap out for Jump Packs if needed.

The other part of this squad I have worked on creating is the individual poses. To make the squad unique I have created a shoulder-pad press mould shield and blood drop icon out of greenstuff for the Knights of Blood  symbol , unfortunately I was not good enough to do the swords as well. The sergeant is a model from the Assault on Blackreach set, one of my favourites, with a right arm swap and boltgun  swap. Some of the other poses are a space marine throwing a hand grenade, another favourite pose, as well as a marine looking at an auspix. I have also converted one marine to carry a combat knife rather than a chain sword.

Stay tuned as I paint these guys up.

Blood Angels - Knights of Blood - Reboot

The picture above was used as reference to paint up my original Tactical Marine which was to kick start my Knights of Blood Army.

Sadly I struggled to get a nice rich red colour that I liked, even after several attempts. I also didn't do a good job on this guys eyes ( something that I have improved on in newer models ). I also thought the bright metal scheme didn't fit in with the brutal nature of these guys, they need something darker.

With my interest rekindled I did the shoulder pad sculpt and went as far as completing a whole squad ( see previous posts ). I formulated a plan to paint up my reds with a white base coat, hoping for that elusive rich red colour, but seeing as I did not have a white primer I used Skull White over a black primed base coat, several coats. I thought that the Red Gore paint would be dark enough to cover the streaky white coat but that was a big mistake!! After another couple of coats it was still a mess so I had to dump the entire squad into my Dettol jar and clean the mess up, unfortunately it removed all my greenstuff press molded shoulder pad icons $%£& !!!!!

The only thing I had left was my original model.

So I decided to paint him up first and get a good result before redoing any greenstuff molds on the squad.

I began with a black base coat as always, then used a mixture of Black and Vallejo Silver Plata to get my nice dark metal colour that is more akin to the scheme in the Blood Angels Codex. I used the more traditional Scab Red base for the reds followed by a layer of Red Gore then another layer of a mixture of Red Gore and Vampire Red from Coat d' Arms. The photo doesn't really show the layering very well and the rich red colour is also less apparent. The shoulder pad icon was left as is without the addition of the crossed swords as I felt the main shield design was enough to identify them for what they are.

Just need to complete a few more details and will post up the final results.

Minotaurs - Dreadnought - Badab War - Finished

All done!! Here is my mighty Dread in all his glory! After the previous post all that was left to do was the details. I added some weathering and battle damage to the red armour only as I felt this area needed some interest. I painted up some Scorched Brown areas on the sides and other places that would see wear and tear, followed that up with some Boltgun Metal to simulate the chipping etc then finished off with a wash to some of the damage to show the difference between newer and older chips. ( see picture below )

Here are the rest of the pictures, enjoy.

I am really enjoying building up this army and next up will be what should be an awesome unit in 6th edition BIKERS!

As always leave a comment below.

Minotaurs - Dreadnought - Badab War - Part 2

More progress on my Mighty Dreadnought, still a pretty mean machine in 6th Edition! Hell who cares its one of the Space Marine iconic units so its cool!

I have added a black wash to the metal parts and a green wash to the red parts. I have also painted up the scrolls and front eagle to bleached bone.

Some more shots below from different angels.

Next up I have been layering up the red areas with Red Gore and Coat d' Arms Vampire Red to get that nice rich red colour. I have also added a blue wash to the Multi Melta barrel to give it  that heated look. I did some more work on the pipes etc on the sarcophagus.

In the shot below I have added a black wash to the barrel to finish off the burnt heated look.

That's as far as I got for now, stay tuned for what should be the final part.

Minotaurs - Dreadnought - Badab War

Next unit to be inducted into my Minotaurs army is the mighty Dreadnought. I cleaned this guy up with Dettol as he was painted up in my Aurelius Legion brass and black colour scheme. After cleaning I primed him with black primer and gave him a thinned down coat of black paint. Next was a coat of Tin Bitz followed by Brazen Brass and a Thraka Green wash, next up a dry brush of Brazen Brass again followed by a wash of my own mix of Verdigris wash. Another drybrush of Brazen Brass to finish off the armour. I then painted the red parts of the armour with a base of Scab Red followed by a layer of Red Gore. The details like scroll work etc was given a Scorched Brown base coat. ( picture above )

Here I have base coated the mechanical parts with Boltgun Metal as well as some details that are metal but not armour.

The one thing I did decide to do was paint the feet and Claw / Fist Red, I think it gives the Dread a bit more of a nasty look. What do you guys think yes / no?

More to follow.

Minotuars - Tactical Squad #2 - Badab War

I have managed to finish off my second tactical squad for my Minotaurs army. It is led by my Sergeant Test model. My force now consists of 2 Tactical Squads and a Scout Squad. Hoping to see how the new rules will effect the weapons load out in the next week or so.

Below you can see the squad after cleaning with Dettol, they were originally my Aurelius Legion Tactical Squad which I used to experiment with the bronze colour on their arms. I decided to clean them up and recycle them because they had too many layers of paint on them in the end.

Next are some more picture of the finished squad.

The method I used to paint these guys is documented in the first post so click on the label for Minotaurs and have a look.

Hope you like them.

Creating Your Own Chapter - Terminators Revisited

Next up on my list of units to repaint is my Terminators. As you can see the bronze look is pretty different to the yellow.

Here are some pictures from other angles.

This is how they looked before.

Here are some WIP shots of the bronze makeover.

I am really warming to this scheme.
