Pre Heresy - Thousand Sons - Finished

Here he is! the non 'politically correct' armour wise Pre Heresy Thousand Sons Marine. I am really happy about how this model turned out bearing in mind I started on his shoulder pad sculpt as a bit of trial and error thing to see how difficult it was going to be to do and I made the 'Decorative Base' from card and painted it to look like a ruined floor from some ancient temple.

The sculpt painted up real nice and I made a press mold for future models.

Some more pictures.

Let me know what you think.

Pre Heresy - Thousand Sons - WIP

When I started to paint this model I realized that I had never painted a completely red armoured Marine before, my Blood Angels project is Knights of Blood which are only partly red. I have also, probably like many people, struggled to get a nice rich red colour on most of my stuff so this Thousand Sons Marine was going to be a challenge.

I started with a base coat of GW's Scab Red applied directly onto the grey plastic of the model / no primer. I then applied a good coat of GW's Blood Red followed by a coat of 50/50 mix of GW's Blood Red and Coat d Arms Vampire Red (see above picture). This gave me the really nice rich red colour I was after.

Next was a wash of black in the recesses. and a touch up of red.

Next was painting some of the details in their respective base colours.

Last was the application of the actual colour on the details.

Almost done, just got to do the highlights and some other details.

Pre Heresy - Thousand Sons - Scarab Shoulder Pad Sculpt

Time to get the new year under way with a post about the sculpt I did late last year while under the influence of 'creative hobby block'.

I could not show you any in between steps as I was only half trying to do this but kept the result as it wasn't too bad. Basically what I did was start with a large oval layer of greenstuff then with lots of pin pricks drew out the rough outline of the scarab with a custom tool which looks like a pen with a thick needle for a tip. Once that was done I cut off the excess with a hobby knife. The body of the scarab is quite easy to sculpt but the legs are pretty tricky to get the symmetry shape right.

I also sculpted a tiny scarab body on the seal of the lower leg, it is a bit big but not an issue.

Here is another shot of the shoulder pad.

Next up the paint job.

Work in Progress Thousand Sons - Sort Of

Firstly thanks to those that left positive comments on my Creative Block post.

For the first time in just over a week I actually sat down at my desk and took out my hobby station. I looked over some of my models stored away and also the stuff that is still waiting for some action (Minotaurs Terminators, Asterion Moloc and Ivanus Enkomi Conversions, Mephiston and Astorath
Conversions, Pre Heresy stuff and loads of Terrain projects just to name a few), it did have some positive effect on me as I picked up a model and some greenstuff and started to sculpt a shoulder pad icon of a Scarab for my planned Pre Heresy Thousand Sons test. This started as a 'lets just see how easy this is' but I kept the result even though it's not my best work by far but more as a reminder that its little sparks like this that may get me out of my slump soon.

The greenstuff is curing right now so hopefully tomorrow I will decide if a paint job can make it look good enough or not, which leads me to a question:

On which side should the scarab go the left or right????

Some of GW's art is confusing as it shows the scarab on the right

and left. This is where I put mine.

Does it even matter?
