Minotaurs - Land Raider - Badab War - Finished

Just finished painting up the etched brass insignia and am very happy with the way this beast looks.

Taking pictures of this big model proved tricky so apologies if they are not the best. The bronze is highly reflective and the size means you should have a greater depth of field which I didn't get so some bits are out of focus.

 A couple of extra shots.

With this completed the only models I still have waiting for their paint job is my Terminators! so stay tuned as they will make an appearance soon (I hope).

Minotaurs - Land Raider - Badab War - On the Painting Table

 
As part of my Minotaur Army creation I am utilizing my Aurelius Legion models as I am not 100% sold their colour scheme just yet (the last incantation of black with bronze trim I rated 90% but still not 100%).

This led me to my Land Raider, I was not going to clean this huge model with Dettol as the quantity required would be half the price of a new Model so I decided to paint over the existing scheme ( Black with red trim) which has already been partially repainted ( with bronze trim).


I am also using the Minotaur Etched Bras Sprue to add the details as its more cost effective instead of forking out a load of cash on the Forgeworld Doors etc.

I am using my new technique to paint the flat surfaces with a sponge rather than a brush. My previous test on the Rhino worked out perfectly.

I started with  base of Tin Bitz. 

Then a layer of Brazen Brass sponged on, a Dark Green wash then a second wash of my Verdigris mix followed by a combination sponge and drybrush layer of Brazen Brass.

The finish from the sponge technique does not leave those brush lines you can get on flat surfaces and on this model any imperfections on the model are from the previous layers of paint.

All that is left is to clean up the model and paint the details.

Minotaurs - Rhino - Badab War - Finished

Well its all done and I really like the finished effect the sponge had on the main bronze parts of the model, no streaks no brush strokes and no pooling of the wash. I added a bit of battle damage to the red armour just to give it a bit of interest and then painted the brass etched icons which really do make the Rhino look the part, also a much cheaper option than buying the very nice but expensive Forge World doors and front plates.

Minotaurs - Rhino - Badab War - Part 2

So this is as far as I got.

All the bronze and metal areas are completed using my standard Minotaurs painting method, namely Tin Bitz base coat followed by a drybrush of Brazen Brass, wash of Thraka Green, another drybrush of Brazen Brass followed by a wash of my custom verdigris mix then a final drybrush of Brazen Brass.

Guess what? I telling fibs!!! This was originally painted up in my Aurelius Legion scheme and as I was painting it I experienced major problems with paint streaks which when viewed at certain angles looked awful in addition the wash would pool in these areas and make it even worse. Now the obvious solution is to use an airbrush and some other ideas I came across, thinned paints etc but I had an idea to use my old trusty sponge, the one I use for adding battle damage to my models. I thought the dabbing effect would eliminate all those streaks and as you can see in the pictures above IT WORKED!

So the process I used to paint the Rhino is exactly the one I described above but not drybrushing anything instead dabbing with my sponge.
