Dark Imperium - Plague Marines - Finished
It feels like this has been a never ending task to complete. I have finally finished but actually I could keep on painting because there are so many details on these models its ridiculous.
The chaos protrusions etc were washed with blues, pink and purples with red used for tongues. The armour was washed with a 60/40 mix of brown and black wash then highlighted with original base colour. Rust (Model Mates) applied to various bits like chain mail. Some verdigris to areas of bronze armour. Cloth was painted in the same way as the post on the backpacks i.e. Warhammer TV method.
They are amazing models and hope the paint job did them justice.

Dark Imperium - Plague Marines - WIP2
I have managed to get some hobby time this week and have completed the base colours on the Plague Marines.
I started with a primer of Army Painter Green Primer Spray for the green armour.
I used a 50/50 mix of dark brown and bronze for the armour trim and once dry I used bronze for the final layer.
The horns and Bone I painted two coats with Tallarn sand.
The cloaks and material parts are painted in Liche Purple.
The chaos protrusions are painted with white. The models are now ready for the washes which should go faster and with a bit of luck I can have these guys done soon..

Dark Imperium - Rust Effects using Model Mates
Continuing working on getting my skills back up to par and trying some new products out. I purchased these Rust Effects by Model Mates at Salute and am now trying it out on the Dark Imperium Death Guard as they are perfect candidates.
I started off by base coating the swords with Leadbelcher and used a red ink in the recesses.
Next was to apply the rust effect like you would paint, the trick with this rust effect is that you can build up the rust with several layers and each layer will give you a slightly different effect.
Once I was happy with the amount of rust I drybrushed more Leadbelcher over the sword and that is it, all done. So easy!
I also used it on the metal symbols hanging from the backpack.
If you are looking for an easy authentic looking rust effect then use this.

Dark Imperium - Painting Bugs
One of the new things to paint on these detail packed models is bugs.
In the previous Dark Vengeance set the models were also jammed full of details including loads of demon faces etc projecting from the body and I made a passable job of painting them but I don't recall any bugs in that set.
Needless to say I couldn't (there probably are) find any tutorials on painting bugs and had to rely on the looking at pictures on the web of this specific model with the bug on its shoulder for reference.
I started with a base colour of Bone for the body and legs and White for the wings, when that was dry I washed the body with Blue, applying several layers to build up the detail around the warts etc on the detail. The legs were washed with Flesh Wash following the same method.
The teeth were highlighted white and the proboscis was washed with a red ink to give it that 'wet' look. I finished with painting the eye black.
The wings were washed with a custom made verdigris wash, allowing some of the white to show through and the tips were then highlighted with white.

Dark Imperium - Painting Smoke the Warhammer TV Way
So to continue working on getting my skills back up to par by following the Warhammer TV guides by Duncan (as far as possible as I don't have all the colours).
My second learning session, smoke from the brazier on the backpack. Taken from the Lord of Contagion Video.
I started with a base of Codex Grey (I still have some of these old colours).
Followed by a wash of Coelia Greenshade.
Next a lighter grey layer leaving the green showing in the recesses.
Last a final highlight of White.
Apologies for the quality of the pictures, it was a grey day when I painted this.

Dark Imperium - Plague Marines - WIP
I have been thinking about a colour scheme and how to paint these guys, watching videos and looking at the web for the last week or so and the plan is to go for the look on the box, green base colour etc
However I don't have the Death Guard Green spray or paint so I was going to prime in black and then use a GW Knarloc Green base colour followed by the metallics etc.
After looking at my paint stock I saw I had the Army Painter Green Primer Spray which I use for my Bolt Action Allies and I knew my problem of a base colour was solved.
Top and below are the first pictures of the models primed straight over plastic build.
Stay tuned for the WIP.

Dark Imperium - Plague Marines - First Thoughts
I have assembled the Plague Marines (still in the raw plastic so no
need to add pictures, there are lots on the web).
My initial thoughts so far.
The sculpts are really good and the level of detail is equally excellent but the question I have been asking myself is:
Are they better than the Dark Vengeance Chaos Marines box set?
My thoughts are that they are the same, the Marines are equally good sculpts with great detail. The Lord of Contagion, Malignant Plaguecaster and the Noxious Blighbringer are all very pretty awesome models, same goes for the Foetid Bloat Drone.
I am still in the camp of these are well worth the cash and will be great to paint when I manage to get some time, but the purchase seems to be 'shiney syndrome' more than anything else.
Not complaining though.
I am going to build the Primaris Marines next.

Dark Imperium - Pox Walkers - First Thoughts
I have assembled the Pox Walkers (not based and in the raw plastic so no need to add pictures) and I wanted to talk about my initial thoughts so far.
The sculpts are really good and the level of detail is equally excellent but the question is:
Are they better than the Dark Vengeance Cultists from the previous box set?
My thoughts are that they are the same, the cultists are also good sculpts with great detail so its a draw, same plastic etc. the thing I am not liking too much is the way they have broken down the different parts of some of the Pox Walker miniatures, I understand it is probably to get more on the sprue, but it makes converting very difficult and in some cases assembly tricky.
I have watched Duncan paint one up on the Warhammer TV painting series and I think I am going to try the method he demonstrated, starting with a white primer followed by various washes.
Check it out if you have not already, link below.

Dark Imperium Box Set
Look what just arrived this morning!
This has got to be the best box set GW has done so far, I was initially sceptical about the whole thing and have lost touch with the gaming side for a long while now.
I will read the rulebook and fluff and decide if I want to pick it up again.
The artwork is also gorgeous.
From a painting and collecting standpoint, it looks amazing! I purchased this without hesitation. I will let you know what my feelings are on the miniatures when I have put some together but first thoughts are 'they look beautiful'.
Once built, the big question will be which chapter to paint them up as.
Any thoughts let me know.
I hope you are all gleefully rummaging through this box set as I am.

40k - Chaos Cultists - The Reborn - Dark Vengeance - Finished
I have applied all the washes and highlights were needed, sorry no in between stage pictures. I was too busy trying to get them finished.
I split the cultists into two groups led by the different maniacs..lol for the pictures, it shows them off better than if they were in one big bunch.
I am really happy with the way they turned out, all gritty and dirty but very evil.

40k - Chaos Cultists - The Reborn - Dark Vengeance - WIP
More Dark Vengeance goodies, by the time I finish this set the new one will be out..lol
This time its the awesome Cultists!
I wanted my cultists to be from many different Imperial Guard Armies. That meant a variety of colours which in turn means it will be hard to make them fit in with the rest of my The Reborn Warband and at the same time make them look like they belong to the same unit themselves.
Black primer was applied first. I then painted all the base colours of the uniforms in reds, blues, greens, browns and greys. I alternated the colours so if one model has a blue trouser he could have a grey jacket and so on, this helped to keep the cohesion while still looking like they come from different armies.
I used the old corroded brass look on the guns to keep the link to The Reborn Warband and I hope once all the shading is done the colours will be muted, dirty and look like they fit together.
Stay tuned to see how they come out!

40k - Chaos Hellbrute - The Reborn - Dark Vengeance - Finished
I added the black metallic trim to the Chaos Symbols around the Eyes on the Claw and Chest Plate only and a few additional washes like the blood dripping from its back.
I also finished the rest of the details like the eyes in the armour and added a few highlights where needed.
Overall I enjoyed the project and am happy the way the model turned out.
Need to think about how I am going to paint the Cultists next!
Let me know what you think with a comment.

40k - Chaos Hellbrute - The Reborn - Dark Vengeance - Last WIP
This is the final stage before completing the model, lack of time is killing my progress.lol
I have built up the final layers of colour on the bone and skin. See pictures above.
Above and below you can see I have started to paint the base of the model and add washes to the skin and bone etc.
This is a close shot so you can see the wash effect on the skin. I am going for a dirty look, almost Nurgle but not so corrupted as these guys are a mix of all Chaos Gods.
Looking good so far.
Next is to tidy up and finish the armour with the black trim and details.

40k - Chaos Hellbrute - The Reborn - Dark Vengeance - More WIP
Making a little progress with this brute..lol. I am now painting up the skin and decided to go for a grey colour as it is muted and will show well under different colour washes, which is the intention for the final result.
I have also painted in the colours of the tentacles, exposed bone and other non skin parts of the model.
Below I have started to build up the base colours towards the final colour, you can see it easily on the bones. I have also painted a lighter shade of grey ( mixed with flesh colour ) onto the raised areas of the skin to highlight the muscles etc.
Next up will be to start the best part, which will be to start adding the washes to create the look I have envisioned.
