3D Printing Journey

I have not done as much printing as I would have liked, the journey is definitly a bit rocky, as most people will tell you.

I tried the next model back in November 2020 and a couple after that, none worked properly.

After much frustration I quit.

After about 4 months I started to look at various youtube videos on what the cause may be. After many hours of searching, I came across what I believed was the main issue - Why my model would not stick to the build plate - the evidence pointed to the temperature of the resin.  My journey began in October during a warm spell and as the weeks past it grew colder and my prints failed in line with the weather, unbeknownst to me at that time).

I waited for the hot weather and in the UK it has only just realy come around (not counting week days as I work and cant print on those days - it has to be the weekends) I put me theory to the test and low and behold perfect prints appeared as if by magic.

Here are some prints of a Heresy era Emperors Children Marine and a second print of a Nightlord Raptor.

Both are great and I am hooked again.

I went for broke and printed two Proxy's of Primarchs, coming up in the next post with some bad news as well.

Night Lords - Horus Heresy - Betrayal at Calth - WIP

After finishing my Sons of Horus Marine I knew I wanted to paint a squad that would require less concentration but still turn out looking great. That thought led me to one of my first choices for the Betrayal at Calth set which is Night Lords.

I have painted up a nice test model and I set about replicating that scheme over the entire squad.

I started with a black primer and then painted the model with a silver. Once dry I applied a wash of black to define the shaded areas and tone down the brightness of the silver.

Next was to apply three separate washes of Drakenhof Nightshade waiting for each one to dry before proceeding to the next. You can see the nice effect this has on the armour as each wash goes on.

Next was to start on all the detail which brings me to the shoulder pads, they are Vampire Shoulder Pads  from Puppets War. These are nicely sculpted in resin but beware when using them as the wing tips carry over the top of the pad and will hinder the fit of backpacks etc if the arm is in the raised position like firing a pistol. I had to clip off the ends on a few to get them to fit which is a shame.

Just need to finish up the details and bases and they will be done. Cant wait!

Enjoy

30k - Pre Heresy - Night Lords - Coversion - Finished

The finished model, I am really glad the wing sculpt on the shoulder pad looks good painted. I was concerned the greenstuff looked a bit suspect in areas.

The other part of my goal, the skull on the helmet, also came out better than I was expecting and I think it adds a really effective, terror inspiring, look to the Nightlords. The lightning streaks on the armour gave me some pause for thought as well, you naturally want to cover the model with them but in the end a few well placed streaks looks much better.

I decided to use my Red Planet base made from ground black pepper and weathering pigment for the model as the red contrasts nicely with the blue armour.

Below is a very nice piece of art that fully encapsulated the Nightlords for me.

Let me know what you think as always.

30k - Pre Heresy - Night Lords - Conversion - WIP

Made a start on painting my converted marine by priming the model with black.

The picture below is my inspiration for the final look and the skull painted onto the helmet is a key feature I want to replicate.

Next I painted the armour with silver.

I then started the glazing/wash process by applying a layer of Drankenhof Nightshade.

Followed by a second layer.

 Finally a third layer.

I cleaned up the details with their respective base colours.

I started with the base colour for the gold with a 50/50 mix of dark brown and gold. I painted the lightning streaks with a fine detail brush in light blue followed by white.

The skull face on the helmet was started with a base colour of brown.

I now just need to finished the final details.
