What about Flames of War?


I am still not entirely out of my modelling slump although I have been slowly working on my Pre Heresy Thousand Sons test mini and enjoying it.

These last couple of weeks though I have been casting a longing eye at the World War 2 hobby and thinking that a foray into it may be the tonic I need to reboot my desire for the hobby.

As a kid I did collect and paint WW2 models, I think they were Tamiya models, so a return to my roots, so to speak, might be a nice change. Now I am not interested in the rules-set of Flames of War as there are no clubs etc anywhere near me, so the gaming side is a non starter and I am not really a gamer as opposed to a modeller. However what Flames of War does have is a very nice starter set which will provide me with a set of rules, should I want them and a large quantity and variety of models for a very reasonable price.

So while I am pondering my situation I thought I might ask you guys what your thoughts are on seeing Flames of War hobby related articles in my blog??

    I vote yes to FoW articles. I recently took the plunge myself.

    If you are interested primarily in the modelling side, the starter set is not perfect. It is great value but the sherman models are a bit hard to assemble (fireflys are fine). The tracks are hard to align and it is hard to eliminate the gaps. If you are for interested in the modelling, then the resin tanks may offer more satisfaction. The infantry looks really good in my opinion. I think they look better than the metal infantry. The price for the starter cannot be beaten though.

      Thanks for the tip about the tanks. I have also been looking at The Plastic Soldier Company as their prices seem cheap compared to the FOW stuff.

    Go for it. Hobby is hobby and FoW could help with cool ideas for 40k anyway.

      My thoughts exactly, similarities include terrain - tank traps, urban barricades, houses, woods etc etc just a different scale.
      painting - still using dry-brushing, layering, washes etc etc just a different palette of colours.

    At lot of the 40k crowd (myself included) are exploring FoW. Go for it. As your blog states, it's about your journey through the *wargaming* hobby, not your 40k hobby.
